Student Loans Outstanding Will Exceed $1 Trillion This Year
USA Today

Students and workers seeking retraining are borrowing extraordinary amounts of money through federal loan programs, potentially putting a huge burden on the backs of young people looking for jobs and trying to start careers. The amount of student loans taken out last year crossed the $100 billion mark for the first time and total loans outstanding will exceed $1 trillion for the first time this year. Americans now owe more on student loans than on credit cards, reports the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Students are borrowing twice what they did a decade ago after adjusting for inflation, the College Board reports. Total outstanding debt has doubled in the past five years ...

Student Loan Debt Leads to Despair and Defaults

... Americans now owe about $950 billion in student loans -- more than their total credit-card debt. The weight of those IOUs is a frequent refrain for Occupy Wall Street protestors and their online supporters ... Two out of five Americans with federal student debt can't make monthly payments and either defer, default or are delinquent, ...

A Long, Steep Drop for Americans' Standard of Living
The Christian Science Monitor

Not since at least 1960 has the US standard of living fallen so fast for so long. The average American has $1,315 less in annual disposable income now than at the onset of the Great Recession. / ... The standard of living for Americans has fallen longer and more steeply over the past three years than at any time since the US government began recording it five decades ago. Bottom line: The average individual now has $1,315 less in disposable income than he or she did three years ago at the onset of the Great Recession - even though the recession ended, technically speaking, in mid-2009.

How Hitler Tackled Unemployment and Revived Germany's Economy
Mark Weber - Podcast

To deal with the massive unemployment and economic paralysis of the Great Depression, both the Roosevelt government in the US and Hitler's government in Germany launched innovative and ambitious programs in 1933. Although Roosevelt's"New Deal" programs helped only marginally, the Third Reich's much more focused and comprehensive policies proved remarkably successful. Within three years unemployment was banished and Germany's economy was booming. This remarkable achievement is little known and rarely acknowledged. Weber also takes a look at the Third Reich's economic and taxation policies, the principles on which they were based, and how they affected people's lives.

Republican Hicks and Holly Rollers
Eric Margolis

... Leading candidates Mitt Romney, pizza mogul Herman Cain, and Texas tough guy Rick Perry barely mentioned world affairs. When they did, it was to either get on their knees to proclaim their loyalty to Israel, or to bluster, as Romney did, "the 21st century must be an American century." But no mention of where the money would come from to keep the world in the American Raj. Romney announced a slate of foreign affairs advisors drawn from the ranks of the Bush administrations wildest anti-Muslim, anti-Arab, anti-Iranian neoconservatives and far right-wingers. The same crowd that brought us Afghanistan, Guantanamo, and Iraq. Aside from the macho chest-pounding, some of the leading candidates made monkeys of themselves when talking about the outside world.

A Dissident Meditation on Jewish Identity: A Review of Gilad Atzmon's "The Wandering Who?"
Prof. Kevin MacDonald

Gilad Atzmon is one of those rarest of all birds -- the sort of person who would be called a "self-hating Jew" by Jewish activists. Except that he doesn't really hate himself and really doesn't have much of a Jewish identity at all. He is an honest leftist who happens to be of Jewish origin; or perhaps one should label him a liberal devoted to the values of the Enlightenment, without the typical Jewish blinders. Although he has a few blinders of his own, he sees quite clearly the incompatibility of Zionism with post-Enlightenment Western civilization. For Atzmon, Zionism is all about Judaism as racial identity politics, ethnic cleansing, and manipulating Western governments via the Israel Lobby. As a child growing up in Israel, "supremacy was brewed into our souls, we gazed at the world through racist, chauvinistic binoculars. And we felt no shame about it either" ...

The End of White America?
Patrick J. Buchanan

... The Census Bureau has now fixed at 2041 the year when whites become a minority in a country where the Founding Fathers had restricted citizenship to "free white persons" of "good moral character." With publication today of "Suicide of a Superpower: Will America Survive to 2025?" this writer takes up what this portends ... What is happening to America is happening across the West. Can Western civilization survive the passing of the European peoples whose ancestors created it and their replacement by Third World immigrants? Probably not, for the new arrivals seem uninterested in preserving the old culture they have found.

New Book by Pat Buchanan Warns of End of The West
Drudge Report

...Pat Buchanan in his hardcore work, "Suicide of a Superpower: Will America Survive to 2025?" Buchanan, set for maximum controversy, launches all rockets at introduction "Disintegrating Nation" -- and does not let up for 400-plus pages. "America is disintegrating. The centrifugal forces pulling us apart are growing inexorably. What unites us is dissolving. And this is true of Western Civilization ... Meanwhile, the state is failing in its most fundamental duties. It is no longer able to defend our borders, balance our budgets, or win our wars." ... "We are trying to create a nation that has never before existed, of all the races, tribes, cultures and creeds of Earth, where all are equal. In this utopian drive for the perfect society of our dreams we are killing the real country we inherited -- the best and greatest country on earth."

Buchanan on NPR Defends His Appearance on James Edwards' Show
James Edwards

Pat Buchanan, always a gentleman, refuses to back down when asked by NPR about his most recent appearance on The Political Cesspool Radio Program. In the meantime, the story of Pat's latest interview with us is quickly becoming a top news story.

The Return of Race Riots to America
Colin Flaherty -- World Net Daily

Thank God for YouTube. Or else we never would have know that hundreds of times in more than 50 cities since 2010, groups of black people have been roaming the streets of America -- assaulting, intimidating, stalking, threatening, vandalizing, stealing, shooting, stabbing, even raping and killing. But today the denials are crumbling. The curtains are lifting. We now can see what so many public officials and media have been curiously desperate to deny: Race riots are back. And not just in Chicago, Philadelphia and New York. Places like Iowa, Wisconsin, Colorado and Indiana have their very own race riots, too.

Jefferson-Hemings Revisited
Peter Wood -- The Chronicle of Higher Education

... Were the widely-reported 1989 DNA tests on descendants of Sally Hemings conclusive? Has the spate of books on the Jefferson-Hemings liaison persuaded the die-hard doubters? In a word, no. A new book, The Jefferson-Hemings Controversy: Report of the Scholars Commission, edited by Robert F. Turner, brings together 13 well-known scholars who have each spent a year or more (some much more) examining every bit of evidence bearing on the case. Their conclusions vary, but only one of them credits the now-popular belief that Jefferson fathered Hemings's children.

Thomas Jefferson and the Sally Hemings Myth
Mark Weber (1993)

Probably the most notorious accusation against Thomas Jefferson is the persistent allegation that he secretly took a mulatto slave named Sally Hemings (or Hemmings) as a mistress, and fathered several children by her.... To those who knew Jefferson, his high moral standards and his deep devotion to his dead wife's memory, the entire story was absurd and contemptible. Nevertheless, it soon gained widespread circulation and many believers.

Criminal Gangs Are Spreading In US Military, FBI Says
Stars and Stripes

U.S. criminal gangs have gained a foothold in the U.S. military and are using overseas deployments to spread tentacles around the globe, according to the FBI. FBI gang investigator Jennifer Simon said in an e-mail to Stars and Stripes this week that gang members have been documented on or near U.S. military bases in Germany, Italy, Japan, South Korea and Iraq. "It's no secret that gang members are prevalent in the armed forces, including internationally," Simon said, adding that the FBI is preparing to release a report on gangs in the military.

Criminal Gangs Infiltrate Every Branch of US Military, Says FBI
Business Insider

The FBI has released a new gang assessment announcing that there are 1.4 million gang members in the US, a 40 percent increase since 2009, and that many of these members are getting inside the military. The report says the military has seen members from 53 gangs and 100 regions in the US enlist in every branch of the armed forces. Members of every major street gang, some prison gangs, and outlaw motorcycle gangs (OMGs) have been reported on both US and international military installations.

Iraqis Eager To See U.S. Troops Leave
Los Angeles Times

More than one million Americans have served in Iraq, and almost 4,500 lost their lives there. Now the Iraqis have given the U.S. military an unequivocal message: Go home. Eight years after U.S. troops overthrew Saddam Hussein, there is little enthusiasm among people on the street for a sustained U.S. presence. And although some Iraqis undoubtedly fear that the U.S. withdrawal could lead to greater instability, others -- notably the lawmakers elected after the U.S.-enabled democratic transition -- appear to think that a quick U.S. departure is about the best thing that could happen ... In Iraq, however, many associate the U.S. presence with instability, violence and suspect motives in a conflict that is believed to have cost at least 100,000 Iraqi lives. These critics view U.S. troops as a lightning rod for militia attacks.

Film Casts Fresh Doubt on William Shakespeare's Work
BBC News

A new historical thriller is re-igniting the age-old debate over the authorship of Shakespeare's body of work. Anonymous takes the view that it was Edward de Vere, Earl of Oxford, and not William Shakespeare who was in fact the true author of the famous plays. Oxford is played by Rhys Ifans, while Queen Elizabeth I is played at different stages of her life by Vanessa Redgrave and her daughter Joely Richardson.

Happy Birthday, `Shakespeare'!
Joseph Sobran (2000)

... The writer we know as "William Shakespeare." Edward de Vere, 17th Earl of Oxford, was born on April 12, 1550. Oxford adopted the name "Shakespeare" in 1593 when he published the poem Venus and Adonis, which he dedicated to the young Earl of Southampton ... As Orson Welles remarked, there are far too many "coincidences" favoring Oxford's authorship to explain away. And no similar details connect the Shakespeare works to the life of William of Stratford. It's quietly sinking in that Oxford was the real "Shakespeare." Sooner or later the academic "experts" are going to have to 'fess up to the most egregious blunder in the history of literary scholarship.

Obama Reportedly Sold Special `Bunker Buster' Bombs to Israel
Ynet News (Israel)

New report claims US secretly approved transfer of 'bunker buster' bombs that could be used in attack against Iran just months after Barack Obama took office, even though Bush administration had previously blocked deal / The upcoming issue of Newsweek, which is set to hit newsstands on Monday, claims that two years ago US President Barack Obama secretly approved the transfer of 55 "bunker busters," a form of deep-penetrating bombs, to Israel. The country had been requesting the bombs since the time of the Bush administration, the Daily Beast website reported on Friday. According to the report, US and Israeli officials told Newsweek that the GBU-28 type bombs, which could be potentially be used in an attack on Iran's nuclear sites, were transferred to Israel in 2009, just several months after Obama came into office.

Racial Gap Continues to Widen in Education
KPTM - Fox 42 (Omaha)

The latest report from the State of Nebraska on schools say while students overall are improving when it comes to writing and science, minority students are falling behind in Math. As a part of the study, 11th graders were evaluated on proficiency in Math. The report says only 19% African American students met or exceeded standards in math. Only 20% of Native Americans and 29% of Hispanic students were proficient. Students from migrant families fared the worst at 17%. That compares to a 69% proficiency rate for white Nebraska students in Math.

Why Truman Overrode State Dept. Warning on Palestine-Israel
Donald Neff

It was on Sept. 22, 1947, that Loy Henderson strongly warned Secretary of State George C. Marshall that partition of Palestine into Arab and Jewish states was not workable and would lead to untold troubles in the future. Henderson was director of the State Department's Office of Near Eastern and African Affairs, and his memorandum ... stands as one of the most perceptive analyses of the perils that partition would bring. Henderson informed Marshall that his views were shared by "nearly every member of the Foreign Service or of the department who has worked to any appreciable extent on Near Eastern problems."

Recalling Truman's Fateful May 1948 Decision to Recognize Israel
Richard H. Curtiss

... An "insider's account" of the discussions leading up to these [1947-1948] decisions has been published by former Secretary of Defense Clark Clifford, one of the few living parties to the discussions leading to partition ... Clifford's story once again disproves the assertion that American diplomatic or military personnel ever viewed Israel as a " strategic asset." The foreign policy establishment, 43 years ago as today, saw Israel as a geopolitical liability that owes its US support to the extraordinary clout of its apologists within the American Jewish community and the American political system.

Russians Open Secret Files to Refute Claims Hitler Escaped From Bunker
The Scotsman (Britain)

Russia is planning to put the files detailing the death of Adolf Hitler in his Berlin bunker on display to disprove allegations in a new book that he escaped to Argentina after the war ... Russia's FSB federal security service holds the entire Hitler file, chronicling his death and his body's strange odyssey through a variety of graveyards in former Communist East Germany until a final cremation in the 1970s ... According to bunker eyewitnesses, Hitler and his new bride retreated to his study to end their lives at 3:30pm on the afternoon of 30 April, 1945. Afterwards, the corpses were carried up to the garden, doused in petrol and set ablaze.

Actor Caviezel Says Hollywood Has Shunned Him for 'Passion' Role
The Guardian (Britain)

The actor who played Jesus in Mel Gibson's 2004 blockbuster The Passion of the Christ says he has been shunned by Hollywood since taking the role. Jim Caviezel was a regular name on cinema hoardings before agreeing to take the lead in the controversial, bloody retelling of Christ's final days. He headlined the 2002 remake of The Count of Monte Cristo and starred opposite Jennifer Lopez in the 2001 romantic drama Angel Eyes. However, Caviezel told an audience of churchgoers in Orlando, Florida on Saturday that he had "been rejected by my own industry" after choosing to join Gibson's cast.

Jewish People Are Just That, People, And Far From Chosen
Gideon Levy -- Haaretz (Israel)

... The idea that we are members of the chosen people is planted far deeper, and not only in Jewish tradition and among those who observe it -- modern and ostensibly secular Israel believes in it with all its heart. There are not many other ancient Jewish ideas as deeply implanted in the contemporary Israeli experience as the idea that the "Jewish people," however it is interpreted, is better than any other nation. If you scratch beneath the skin of almost any Israeli, you'll discover that he really is convinced of that: We're the best; the "Jewish genius" is the most successful; the Israel Defense Forces is the most moral. Nobody will tell them different, we're simply the best in the world. This is not only unnecessary and groundless arrogance, it's also an extremely dangerous idea that enables Israel to behave as it does, with blatant disregard of the world's feelings.

America's Child Death Shame
Michael Petit -- BBC News

Over the past ten years, more than 20,000 American children are believed to have been killed in their own homes by family members. That is nearly four times the number of US soldiers killed in Iraq and Afghanistan. The child maltreatment death rate in the US is triple Canada's and eleven times that of Italy. Millions of children are reported as abused and neglected every year. Why is that? Part of the answer is that teen pregnancy, high-school dropout, violent crime, imprisonment, and poverty - factors associated with abuse and neglect - are generally much higher in the US.

Antidepressant Use Skyrockets 400% in Past 20 Years
USA Today

Use of antidepressant drugs [in the US] has soared nearly 400 percent since 1988, making the medication the most frequently used by people ages 18-44, a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows. Eleven percent of Americans ages twelve years and older took antidepressants during the 2005-08 study period, the authors write. They add that though the majority of antidepressants were taken to treat depression, the drugs also can be used for anxiety disorders and other conditions.

Can a Geriatric Germany Save Europe?
Patrick J. Buchanan

... Across Europe, not one nation has a birth rate sufficient to replace its native-born population. The share that is of working age is shriveling, while the share that is eligible for state-funded pensions, social security and health care is growing. And it is the Germans who are leading Europe into retirement centers, assisted living facilities and nursing homes. Europe needs more young workers to maintain the dynamism of the continent and make good on all promises made to her people. To the south, the exploding Muslim populations of the Maghreb and the Middle East appear ready to come and help out. "This is the way the world ends/Not with a bang but a whimper."

New York Removes Yiddish Signs Telling Women To Move For Men
Los Angeles Times

New York city workers who recently removed colorful signs in Yiddish advising women in a Hasidic neighborhood to step aside for men were not part of some feminist protest. The New York City Parks Department took down 16 signs because they were illegally bolted to city-owned trees on Bedford Avenue in the South Williamsburg section of Brooklyn. As translated by the Jewish watchdog blog Failed Messiah, the signs read: "Precious Daughter: Please move to the other side when you see a man come across." Another translation ended with: "Move to the side when a man approaches."

Why The Recovery Feels Worse Than The recession
Mark Mardell -- BBC News

America feels a gloomier place today than when I arrived two years ago. It is not hard to work out why. ... The gloom isn't just down to punctured expectations. People are actually poorer. The report says that household income has gone down more in the period officially labeled as a recovery than in the recession itself ... Between June 2009 and June 2011 -- a time when the US economy was in recovery - that same indicator of household income fell by an additional 6.7%, from $53,518 to $49,909 ... From the entire period of December 2007 to June 2011, real median annual household income has declined by 9.8 percent.

What Every American Should Know About The Collapse of the Economy
The Economic Collapse Blog

The U.S. economy is dying and most American voters have no idea why it is happening. Unfortunately, the mainstream media and most of our politicians are not telling the truth about the collapse of the economy. This generation was handed the keys to the greatest economic machine that the world has ever seen, and we have completely wrecked it. Decades of incredibly foolish decisions have left us drowning in an ocean of corruption, greed and bad debt. Thousands of businesses and millions of jobs have left the country and poverty is exploding from coast to coast. We are literally becoming a joke to the rest of the world.

Jews and Wall Street
Mark Weber - Podcast

Alleged anti-Jewish sentiment in the "Occupy Wall Street" movement has raised the issue of the Jewish role in finance and business life. In fact, Jews wield vastly disproportionate power and influence in American business and finance, far more than any other single ethnic-religious group. It's no exaggeration to say that Jews "control" Wall Street. A recent "debate" by leading Republican presidential candidates underscores the lack of principle and seriousness in the US political process, and an entrenched childishness in American society. The policies of Ronald Reagan, like those of Barack Obama, do not match the leaders' eloquent rhetoric.

Jews And `Occupy Wall Street'
Kevin MacDonald

... What we won't find among the Jewish protesters is any allusion to Jewish involvement on Wall St. Last Thursday I was driving to work listening to Bill Handel, a Jewish LA-area talk show host discussing the protests. He said he was not angry with Wall St. -- "It's my tribe that controls Wall St. Why would I be upset?" ... In fact, of course, Jews do have a dominant position on Wall St., a fact that has not gone unnoticed even by Jewish scholars like Benjamin Ginsberg who noted in his 1999 book The Fatal Embrace: Jews and the State that 50% of Wall Street executives were Jewish. It's doubtless at least that high now.

Los Angeles Teacher Fired for Anti-Jewish Remark
JTA (New York)

A substitute teacher for the Los Angeles Unified School District has been fired after making anti-Semitic remarks. Patricia McAllister said during an interview at an "Occupy Los Angeles" protest on Oct. 12 that "I think that the Zionist Jews who are running these big banks and our Federal Reserve, which is not run by the federal government -- they need to be run out of this country."

U.S. Hawks Behind Iraq War Rally for Strikes Against Iran
Jim Lobe - IPS

Key neo-conservatives and other right-wing hawks who championed the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq are calling for military strikes against Iran in retaliation for its purported murder-for-hire plot against the Saudi ambassador here. Leading the charge is the Foreign Policy Initiative (FPI), the ideological successor to the Project for the New American Century (PNAC), which played a critical role in mobilising support for "regime change" in Iraq in the late 1990s and subsequently spearheaded the public campaign to invade the country after the 9/11 attacks.

Republican Foreign Policy Follies
Philip Giraldi

... It is no longer plausible that anyone who has seriously thought about the issue should think that Israel is anything but a liability to the United States ... It does not take a genius to note that Romney is shaping American foreign policy in light of Israel's perceived interests, not the interests of his own country ... Though the United States has far-flung and global relationships, the foreign policy is increasingly Israel-centric, at least as it is defined by the aspirants to high office. If America is ever to become a sane country again, this must stop.

In France, New PC Textbooks Drastically Alter History
RT (Russia) -- Video

No To Napoleon: 'PC Gone Mad' As French Textbooks Purge Past / Parents and teachers across France are up in arms over new textbooks which carry accounts of French history revised to avoid insulting ethnic minority pupils. They say common sense has been sacrificed to political correctness in French schools. Natives of France now fear their identity will soon disappear along with their history.

Is Israel Over?
Benny Morris - Newsweek

... A profound, internal, existential crisis has arrived. It stems in part from the changing nature of the country, more right wing, more restrictive, far less liberal, and far less egalitarian. Many moderate Israelis fear the country is heading for ruin ... Israel ranks as one of the worst (alongside Mexico and the United States) in terms of wealth polarization. Israel suffers from a steady brain drain, with tens of thousands of university graduates and wannabe academics moving abroad for lack of adequate positions or pay. Berlin has a community of more than 10,000 young Israelis.

Israel Government 'Reckless and Irresponsible' Says Ex-Mossad Chief
The Guardian (Britain)

The former head of Israel's spy service has launched an unprecedented attack on the country's current government, describing it as "irresponsible and reckless", and has praised Arab attempts to reach an Israeli-Palestinian peace agreement. Meir Dagan stepped down as the head of Mossad six months ago but has gone on the offensive in a series of briefings with journalists and public appearances because he feels that Israel's security is being mismanaged by Binyamin Netanyahu, the prime minister, and Ehud Barak, the defence minister.

The Real Story of How Israel Was Created
Alison Weir

To better understand the Palestinian bid for membership in the United Nations, it is important to understand the original 1947 UN action on Israel-Palestine. The common representation of Israel's birth is that the UN created Israel, that the world was in favor of this move, and that the US governmental establishment supported it. All these assumptions are demonstrably incorrect. ... The US administration supported the recommendation out of domestic electoral considerations, and took this position over the strenuous objections of the State Department, the CIA, and the Pentagon ... The U.S. State Department opposed this partition plan strenuously, considering Zionism contrary to both fundamental American principles and US interests.

Is The New World Order Unraveling?
Patrick J. Buchanan

... Why is the New World Order suddenly going in reverse? A primary reason is the resurgence of nationalism. Nations are putting national interests ahead of any perceived global interests. A second reason is the decline of a West whose project this was. We no longer dictate to the world, and the world no longer marches to our tune. The deficits and indebtedness of Western nations preclude more of the big wealth transfers in foreign aid that once bought us influence. A third reason is demography. Not one European nation has a birth rate sufficient to replace its population. Europe's nations are aging, shrinking, dying. ...

In Europe, `Populist Extremism' Here To Stay. Report Says
Epoch Times (New York)

Extremist parties with a populist and xenophobic agenda "present one of the most pressing challenges to European democracies", according to a new report from Chatham House ... What unites these parties, according to the report, is their opposition to immigration plus their attacks on the establishment, and traditional parties, for being corrupt, distant, and not listening to the people. Their voters, on the other hand, are united by deep hostility toward immigration, multiculturalism, and ethnic diversity. Supporters of extremist parties are, on the whole, not irrational, but guided by a deep concern about these issues, although their views may seem distasteful to the majority, the report says

Was William Shakespeare A Fraud?
The Telegraph (Britain)

Did he or didn't he? That is the question. The debate over whether William Shakespeare could write his own name, let alone the body of works considered among the greatest in English literature, has consumed minds for more than 150 years. Now a new film, Anonymous, by Independence Day director Roland Emmerich, is about to throw more fuel on the fire. Anonymous, released on October 28, is set in the political snake-pit of Elizabethan England. It asserts that Edward de Vere, the 17th Earl of Oxford, was the true author of the Bard's plays. And Shakespeare, an actor, was a mere provincial frontman for the plays so Oxford's authorship could remain secret.

The Death of Shakespeare
Joseph Sobran (2004)

... "Shakespeare" -- Edward de Vere, 17th Earl of Oxford -- died ... on June 24, 1604, at age 54. In his own time he was known as a brilliant poet and playwright, though he preferred, as a gentleman, not to publish his work under his own name, deeming it beneath his dignity to write for money and popularity ... While trying to shield his good name by writing under pseudonyms, he in effect gave away the greatest literary reputation of modern times, lending an unmerited glory to a minor actor from the little town of Stratford upon Avon who could barely sign his own name.

Was the US Declaration of Independence Illegal?
BBC News

In Philadelphia, American and British lawyers have debated the legality of America's founding documents ... Just what did Thomas Jefferson think he was doing? Some background: during the hot and sweltering summer of 1776, members of the second Continental Congress travelled to Philadelphia to discuss their frustration with royal rule. By July 4, America's founding fathers approved a simple document penned by Jefferson that enumerated their grievances and announced themselves a sovereign nation. Called the Declaration of Independence, it was a blow for freedom, a call to war, and the founding of a new empire. It was also totally illegitimate and illegal. At least, that was what lawyers from the UK argued during a debate at Philadelphia's Ben Franklin Hall.

Was Reagan Too 'Anti-Israel' For Today's Republicans?
Mark Weber

Leading Republicans say that President Obama is not a real friend of Israel, and that his policies are harming the Jewish state. They criticize Obama for his view that Israel should halt Jewish settlement expansion in occupied Palestinian territory, and that the pre-1967 borders should be the basis of peace negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians ...But in key points, Obama's Middle East policy is similar to that of President Ronald Reagan, whom most Republicans regard as their party's greatest leader in living memory ... If the Republican critics of Obama's Middle East policy are honest and consistent, they must reject President Reagan's
policy as similarly dangerous, "naïve" and harmful to Israel.

The Cult of Reagan, and Other Neocon Follies
Thomas E. Woods, Jr.

Some time ago The American Spectator's Jeffrey Lord claimed Ron Paul's foreign policy of nonintervention was "liberal," and that conservatives are supposed to be hawkish on foreign policy. Now to some extent, no one really cares about these labels, and who qualifies as what. But it is obviously false to say that supporters of nonintervention must be left-liberals. I showed this in my YouTube response, which dismantled Lord's entire position ... I pointed out in the video that the anti-imperialist movement in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries was dominated by the conservatives, as historian William Leuchtenberg has noted.

Forgetting Reagan: Too Liberal For Today's GOP?
Sally Kohn

It's beyond ironic that the pack of extremist ideologues running in the Republican primary debated last night at the Ronald Reagan Library. After all, as Senator Lindsay Graham, a Republican from South Carolina, recently observed: "Ronald Reagan would have a hard time getting elected as a Republican" in today's party. That's because, at least by Tea Party standards, Reagan was kind of liberal -- a fact that seemed to escape the GOP candidates claiming his mantle. Here are the top five ways the real Reagan would have landed in hot water with Republicans beholden to the Tea Party: ... Reagan Gave Amnesty to Undocumented Immigrants; Reagan Shored Up Social Security; ... Reagan Raised Taxes.

U.S. Officials Peddle False Intel to Support Terror Plot Claims
Gareth Porter

Officials of the Barack Obama administration have aggressively leaked information supposedly based on classified intelligence in recent days to bolster its allegation that two higher-ranking officials from Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) were involved in a plot to assassinate Saudi Ambassador Adel al-Jubeir in Washington, D.C. The media stories generated by the leaks helped divert press attention from the fact that there is no verifiable evidence of any official Iranian involvement in the alleged assassination plan, contrary to the broad claim being made by the administration. But the information about the two Iranian officials leaked to NBC News, the Washington Post and Reuters was unambiguously false and misleading ...

War With US of No Interest to Iran; Who Invented This Absurd Plot?
Alexander Cockburn

Even by the forgiving standards of American credulity, the supposed Iranian plot to assassinate the Saudi ambassador to the US is spectacularly ludicrous ... Why would Iran want to kill the Saudi envoy -- the mild-mannered functionary Adel al-Jubeir? To kill any ambassador -- particularly a Saudi ambassador -- is to invite lethal retaliation, even war. Iran doesn't want war with the US ... The question is why the U.S. government should nail its colors so firmly to the mast of this purported Iranian assassination plot. On two other occasions, the U.S. made passionate commitments at the U.N. to concocted evidence ... Iran doesn't want war with the US. But how far will the US go in its response, led as it is by a weak president always glancing fearfully over his shoulder at the neo-cons and the war party?

Not So Much A Murder Plot As A Screenplay
Adrian Hamilton -- The Independent (Britain)

You couldn't make it up. An Iranian-American paying $1.5 million to Mexican drug gangsters to assassinate the Saudi ambassador to Washington, and all at the behest of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps back in Tehran ... Of course it's always possible that some element of the security forces, or even some individuals, have been up to amateur assassination theatrics. But it is also more than possible that the latest plot is the result of an over-heated imagination and entrapment by the FBI. It was only a decade ago, after all, that President Bush was proclaiming the "foiling" of an al-Qa'ida terror plot among the Yemeni-Americans of Buffalo, New York and that all fizzled into nothing.

Iran's President Rejects Saudi Plot Claims
BBC News

Iran's president has said US claims of a plot to assassinate a Saudi envoy are as false as its allegations were about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said the US had hoped to make people forget about its "internal economic problems". In an appearance on al-Jazeera he also said the US was looking for an excuse to toughen sanctions against Iran.

US Started Afghan War Lacking Info, Says Ex-Commander
The Associated Press

The U.S. began the war in Afghanistan with a "frighteningly simplistic" view of the country and even ten years later lacks knowledge that could help bring the conflict to a successful end, a former top commander said Thursday. Retired Army Gen. Stanley McChrystal said in remarks at the Council on Foreign Relations that the U.S. and its NATO allies are only "a little better than" 50 percent of the way to reaching their war goals.... "We didn't know enough and we still don't know enough," he said. "Most of us - me included - had a very superficial understanding of the situation and history, and we had a frighteningly simplistic view of recent history, the last 50 years."

Nine Charged in Holocaust Reparation Fraud

Charges have been brought against nine more people accused of defrauding two New York programs that give reparations to Holocaust survivors ... A total of 30 people have been charged in the case. Five of the suspects are former employees of the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany, based in New York. They allegedly processed applications to provide reparations to those not eligible for the funds in exchange for a kickback. "As I said when the initial charges in this case were announced, my office, working with our partners at the FBI, would not stop until we brought to justice those who are alleged to have stolen more than $57 million from the Claims Conference, thereby diverting money intended for survivors of the Holocaust,"

Hitler Was Right About Jews, Says Saudi Columnist

In an article titled "Liberalism -- A Jewish Deception," Saudi columnist Khaled Al-Ghanami justified Hitler's views on the Jews as expressed in his book Mein Kampf, and claimed that the Jews today were exploiting economic liberalism as a means to topple the Arab states and control the world. The article was received positively by many readers, who defended Al-Ghanami's claims and even asked him to expand on them. ... "Regardless of our views on Adolf Hitler, his book Mein Kampf contains many stories and much philosophical commentary worth reading. Hitler's position vis-a-vis the Jews was not capricious. It was a position he formulated over dozens of years of observing them.

Bizarre 'Plot' Goes Against All That Is Known of Iran's Intelligence Service
Patrick Cockburn -- The Independent (Britain)

The claim that Iran employed a used-car salesman with a conviction for check fraud to hire Mexican gangsters to assassinate the Saudi ambassador in Washington goes against all that is known of Iran's highly sophisticated intelligence service. The confident announcement of this bizarre plot by the US Attorney General Eric Holder sounds alarmingly similar to Secretary of State Colin Powell's notorious claim before the UN in 2003 that the US possessed irrefutable evidence Saddam Hussein was developing weapons of mass destruction ... The beneficiaries from such a plot are evident. There will be those on the neo-con right and extreme supporters of Israel who have long been pressing for a war with Iran.

Experts Skeptical of Iran Assassination Plot Claims
The Christian Science Monitor

... Iran specialists who have followed the Islamic Republic for years say that many details in the alleged plot just don't add up. "It's a very strange case, it doesn't really fit Iran's mode of operation," says Alireza Nader, an Iran analyst at the Rand Corp. in Arlington, Va., and coauthor of studies about the Revolutionary Guard ... "This [plot] doesn't seem to serve Iran's interests in any conceivable way," says Nader.

The Day America Died
Paul Craig Roberts

... Many expected President Obama to re-establish the accountability of government to law. Instead, he went further than Bush/Cheney and asserted the unconstitutional power not only to hold American citizens indefinitely in prison without bringing charges, but also to take their lives without convicting them in a court of law. Obama asserts that the US Constitution notwithstanding, he has the authority to assassinate US citizens, who he deems to be a "threat," without due process of law. In other words, any American citizen who is moved into the threat category has no rights and can be executed without trial or evidence ... Voting has no effect. President "Change" is worse than Bush/Cheney.

Obama's Palestinian Veto: Let's Be Honest
Henry Siegman -- The New York Review

... There is little point in engaging Obama's apologia for Israel's rejectionism because from everything known about this man and his intelligence, no one in the UN audience thought he himself believes a word of it. ... Obama's speech at the UN has finally shattered that expectation. No one who was in that audience any longer believes that America is the indispensable party for an Israeli-Palestinian peace agreement. Indeed, it has become painfully clear that America is "uniquely" obstructing the process, using its influence in Western Europe and elsewhere to shield Israel from international pressures that might change its rejectionist stance.

Texting Makes U Stupid
Niall Ferguson

The good news is that today's teenagers are avid readers and prolific writers. The bad news is that what they are reading and writing are text messages ... Half of today's teenagers don't read books -- except when they're made to. According to the most recent survey by the National Endowment for the Arts, the proportion of Americans between the ages of 18 and 24 who read a book not required at school or at work is now 50.7 percent, the lowest for any adult age group younger than 75, and down from 59 percent 20 years ago.

Suicide of a Superpower
Patrick J. Buchanan

This generation of Americans has been witness to one of the most stunning declines of a great power in the history of the world ... We have a system failure rooted in a societal failure. For behind the disaster lay greed, stupidity, and incompetence on a colossal scale. "Avarice, ambition," warned John Adams, will "break the strongest cords of our Constitution as a whale goes through a net. Our Constitution is made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate for any other." America's fiscal crisis is a test of whether democracy is sustainable. Adams, like others of the Founding Fathers, did not think so. "Remember, that democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There never was a democracy yet that did not commit suicide."

The Democracy Worshipers
Patrick J. Buchanan

... Yet what our fathers feared we embrace. For it may fairly be said of this generation that it worships democracy. Indeed, the fanaticism of this faith in democracy as the path to worldly salvation causes many to hail any and all revolutions against any and all autocrats. One wonders: How is it that this childlike faith endures? ... Democratists who demand we distance ourselves from the kings of Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Morocco and Bahrain, who do they think will replace these monarchs? Do they care, or is democracy the right way, results be damned?

David Irving on Parallels Between Iraq War and World War Two
Institute for Historical Review - Audio-Video

Best-selling British historian David Irving draws parallels between aspects of the war in Iraq and World War II, and how the US invasion of Iraq has fueled global hostility toward America. Address at an IHR meeting in southern California, Dec. 2003. Runtime: 55:06 mins.

Auction Of Hitler Items Angers Jewish Group

Organizers of an auction of Adolf Hitler's reading glasses and other personal effects were on the verge of abandoning the sale early Wednesday after an outcry over profiting from Germany's Nazi past. The Fuhrer's glasses were due to be put up for auction with a reserve price of EUR4,800 (US$6,355) at a Munich auction house this month, while bidding for a silver cigarette case monogrammed with the initials of the non-smoking dictator was set to begin at EUR10,000 ... While public display of the swastika is illegal in Germany, and the symbols have been carefully airbrushed out of the auction catalogue, there is no ban on the sale of Nazi memorabilia. The sale has alarmed Jewish groups, The (London) Times reported.

Muslim, Christian Graves Vandalized in Israeli City

Less than a week after the arson of a mosque in northern Israel, dozens of Christian and Muslim graves were vandalized in an Arab section of the Israeli city of Jaffa ... Among the words spray-painted in Hebrew on the gravestones were "price tag" and "death to all Arabs." "Price tag" is a term frequently used by radical Israeli settlers to denote reprisal attacks against Palestinians in response to moves by the Israeli government to evacuate illegal West Bank outposts, or as retribution for attacks by Palestinians.

Jewish Settlers' Mosque-Burning Campaign Expands

They strike in the dead of night, setting fire to mosques and daubing their walls with "Price Tag" graffiti, the defiant slogan of Israeli settlers waging a vigilante campaign branded as "un-Jewish" by President Shimon Peres. The "price-taggers" have vowed to avenge any move by Israeli authorities to uproot settlement outposts built in the occupied West Bank without Israeli government permission ... No one has been charged in the three arson attacks in the West Bank over the past year, an indication, Palestinians say, of indifference by a right-wing government that includes pro-settler parties. Now the "Price Tag" campaign has widened ...

There Are A Lot More Jews in the US Than Many Realize
Half Sigma

The number commonly tossed around for the percent of Jews in the United State is two percent. Indeed, when I used the RELIG variable in the GSS for the survey years 2000-2008, 1.9 percent of respondents said they were Jewish. However, the RELIG16 variable, which asks in what religion the respondent was raised, 2.1 percent were raised Jewish ... The number of people in the United States with some Jewish ancestry is a lot greater than two percent, probably more like four percent, which would be more like five percent of the country's white population.

Secret Panel Can Put Americans on 'Kill List'

'American militants like Anwar al-Awlaki are placed on a kill or capture list by a secretive panel of senior government officials, which then informs the president of its decisions, according to officials. There is no public record of the operations or decisions of the panel, which is a subset of the White House's National Security Council, several current and former officials said. Neither is there any law establishing its existence or setting out the rules by which it is supposed to operate. The panel was behind the decision to add Awlaki, a U.S.-born militant preacher with alleged al Qaeda connections, to the target list. He was killed by a CIA drone strike in Yemen late last month.

An Unconstitutional Killing: Obama's Killing of Awlaki Violates American Law
Rep. Ron Paul

... President Obama apparently believes he is not bound by the Constitution or the rule of law .... The precedent set by the killing of Awlaki establishes the frightening legal premise that any suspected enemy of the United States - even if they are a citizen - can be taken out on the President's say-so alone. Part of the very concept of citizenship is the protection of due process and the rule of law. The President wants to spread American values around the world but continues to do great damage to them here at home, appointing himself judge, jury and executioner by presidential decree.

American Schools: More Boring Than Ever
Daniel Denvir -- Salon.com

Forty-nine million or so American children have returned to public school classrooms that are, according to many critics, ever more
boring. Preparation for increasingly high-stakes tests has reduced time for social studies and science. Austerity state and federal budgets are decimating already hobbled music, art, library and physical education budgets. "When reading and math count and nothing else does, then less time and resources are devoted to non-tested subjects like the arts, science, history, civics and so on," education historian Diane Ravitch, a well-known high-stakes testing critic and one-time proponent, writes ...

Hitler's Favorite Jew: The Strange Case of Dr. Eduard Bloch
Open Salon

... In fact, there has never been any mystery about Dr. Eduard Bloch. He was repeatedly interviewed by the Office of Strategic Services or OSS after his arrival in the US in 1940 and also published an autobiography in Collier's Weekly in 1941. This information has been out there for generations, but so far no one has dared touch it ... In his testimony to the OSS, Bloch stated that during Hitler's Vienna days, when the frustrated artist was supposedly already a convinced anti-Semite, he mailed Bloch a postcard with the words: "From Vienna I send you my greetings. Yours, always faithfully, Adolf Hitler." Hitler also once sent New Year's wishes on one of his own self-painted post cards and even presented the doctor with one of his paintings.

My Patient, Hitler: A Memoir of Hitler's Jewish Physician
Dr. Eduard Bloch

... What kind of boy was Adolf Hitler? Many biographers have put him down as harsh-voiced, defiant, untidy; as a young ruffian who personified all that is unattractive. This simply is not true. As a youth he was quiet, well-mannered and neatly dressed ... In the practice of my profession it is natural that I should have witnessed many scenes such as this one, yet none of them left me with quite the same impression. In all my career I have never seen anyone so prostrate with grief as Adolf Hitler.

Obama Throws Palestine Under the Bus
Jim Lobe

The right-wing government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu could not be more pleased. Not only did the allegedly most "anti-Israel" president ever repeat, for the nth time, that "America's commitment to Israel's security is unshakeable," he also made it crystal clear that Washington will veto any Palestinian application to the U.N. Security Council for statehood in his speech to the U.N. General Assembly ... "It's really about donors, not about votes, except perhaps in Florida (where Jews make up about five percent of the electorate)," according to M.J. Rosenberg, a veteran Israel analyst at Media Matters who worked for years at AIPAC and on Capitol Hill where AIPAC wields its greatest influence.

Palestinian Statehood Would End Israel's Immunity, Says Hanan Ashrawi
RT (Russia)

With full member status at the UN, Palestine may finally be able to hold Israel to account for its crimes against the Palestinian
people and the occupation of their land, believes Palestinian politician Hanan Ashrawi. ... She says receiving full recognition would officially define Palestinian territory as "occupied" by Israel rather than merely "disputed," and "would lay the foundation of any resolution based on international law." "That opens the door for us to become a member of all UN organizations, institutions, agencies, and so on. It would empower the Palestinians," she said ... Ashrawi believes the chief reason Israel has been given special treatment is because it has a powerful lobby in the US.

Turkish Leader Rebukes Israel's 'Obsession' With The Holocaust
Arutz Sheva (Israel)

In an interview with CNN Saturday night, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan again attacked Israel, minimizing Israeli casualties from Arab rocket attacks ... Erdogan also derided what he called Israel's "obsession" with the Holocaust, accusing it of using the events of World War II to paint Israel as a victim. Erdogan in the interview again demanded that Israel apologize for the deaths of nine Hamas-affiliated activists on the Mavi Marmara last year, and provide compensation for the families.

Modern Finland Still Honors The Swastika
Aarne Ellilä (Finland)

For centuries Finns regarded the swastika as a venerable symbol. After Finland achieved independence in 1918, it was adopted for official use. During World War II, when the nation was an ally of Germany, it appeared on Finnish airplanes and tanks. It was abandoned after the defeat in 1945. In 1957 the swastika was reintroduced as an emblem on the nation's air force ensign, and for some other official uses.

America's New Racists
Walter Williams

... Today all that has changed. Most racist assaults are committed by blacks ... In many of these brutal attacks, the news media make no mention of the race of the perpetrators. If it were white racist gangs randomly attacking blacks, the mainstream media would have no hesitation reporting the race of the perps. Editors for the Los Angeles Times, the New York Times, and the Chicago Tribune admitted to deliberately censoring information about black crime for political reasons. Chicago Tribune Editor Gerould Kern recently said that the paper's reason for censorship was to "guard against subjecting an entire group of people to suspicion."

Dr Joel Hayward in the Zionist Firing Line, Again
Dr. K. R. Bolton

In 1993, Joel Hayward completed an MA thesis on the literature of holocaust revisionism. Hayward was of Jewish descent, was a member of the New Zealand Friends of Israel, and a co-founder of Opposition to Anti-Semitism. Yet in the course of his studies, he had come to regard holocaust revisionist literature as making some valid points. It was a controversial conclusion that nonetheless garnered Hayward First Class Honors ... Move forward to the present, and Hayward is again being pilloried in what appears to be another campaign to have his academic career wrecked. A feature in The Daily Mail is provocatively entitled: "Ayatollah of the RAF.

Prof. Mearsheimer Responds to Goldberg's Latest Smear
John Mearsheimer -- Foreign Policy

... In sum, Goldberg's charge that Atzman is a Holocaust denier or an apologist for Hitler is baseless. Nor is Atzmon an anti-Semite. He has controversial views for sure and he sometimes employs overly provocative language. But there is no question in my mind that he has written a fascinating book that, as I said in my blurb, "should be widely read by Jews and non-Jews alike." Regarding Goldberg's insinuation that I have any sympathy for Holocaust denial and am an anti-Semite, it is just another attempt in his longstanding effort to smear Steve Walt and me.

The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy
John J. Mearsheimer, Stephen M. Walt (Introduction excerpts)

... Now that the Cold War is over, Israel has become a strategic liability for the United States. Yet no aspiring politician is going to say so in public, or even raise the possibility. There is also no compelling moral rationale for America's uncritical and uncompromising relationship with Israel... The real reason why American politicians are so deferential is the political power of the Israel lobby ... Democrats and Republicans alike fear the lobby's clout. They all know that any politician who challenges its policies stands little chance of becoming president ... The Israel lobby has successfully convinced many Americans that American and Israeli interests are essentially identical. In fact, they are not.

Half of U.S. Says Afghan War Not a Success, New Poll Shows
CBS News

Half of Americans think the U.S.-led war in Afghanistan hasn't been a success, a CBS News poll released Monday shows. This week marks the 10th anniversary of the war's beginning ... While 50 percent of Americans don't consider the war to be a success, 39 percent of Americans do. When respondents' answers were broken down by political group -- Democrat, independent and Republican -- Republicans were the only political group where more respondents considered the war a success (49 percent) than didn't (41 percent). Fifty-five percent of Democrats don't consider the war a success; 35 percent do. With independents, thirty-six percent called the war a success and 52 percent didn't.

Why The Israel-Palestine Issue Is Important for Americans
Mark Weber - Podcast

The way that American political leaders and the US mass media deal with the Israel-Palestine conflict is an expression of a corrupt, unhealthy society that ignores basic historical and political realities and betrays the principles it claims to uphold. America 's policy of ardent support for the Zionist state also puts the US increasingly at odds against the rest of the world. As the new US ambassador to Israel recently acknowledged, US policy in the Middle East is driven by concern for Israel 's interests -- and not by what's best for America and humanity.

Biggest Losers in Palestine Veto? The American People
Philip Giraldi

... Since it [the Palestinian statehood bid] will certainly pass with a huge majority in the [UN] General Assembly if the Palestinians opt to go that route, it will provide overwhelming international confirmation of Palestinian rights with the U.S. and Israel standing on the wrong side on the issue. It will also severely undermine Israel 's moral position, such as it is, and emphasize the illegality of the Israeli occupation of parts of the West Bank . ... And the damage extends beyond that. Saudi Arabia has already warned that the U.S. veto will do irreparable damage to its bilateral relationship with Washington and will also forever destroy America 's reputation in the Arab world. It would hasten the development of the clash of civilizations, "us and them" point of view, dividing much of the developing world from Washington .

Sad and Happy: Palestinian Statehood
Uri Avnery

... When the "Two-State Solution" was conceived for the first time after 1948, it was as an idea of reconciliation, fraternization and mutual respect ... This vision was firmly rejected by David Ben-Gurion, then the undisputed leader of Israel . He was busy distributing new Jewish immigrants across the vast areas expropriated from the Arabs, and he did not believe in peace with the Arabs anyhow. He set the course that successive Israeli governments, including the present one, have followed ever since ... In history, symbols count. The fact that the vast majority of the world's nations will have recognized the State of Palestine will be another step towards gaining freedom for Palestine .

A Win-Win Strategy for the Palestinians
Barbara F. Walter and Andrew Kydd - Los Angeles Times

... The Palestinians are playing a long-term bargaining game, and any move toward the goal of statehood has to be considered a victory. Statehood will not come immediately, or when a vote is taken in the Security Council. What will happen is that support for it will slowly and surely increase among average citizens around the world. The extreme positions of Israel and the United States -- their refusal to pursue real efforts to allow Palestinians to rule themselves and be free of military occupation -- will be increasingly revealed, and tolerance for these positions, even among Israelis and Americans, will decline.

As Federal Crime List Grows, Threshold of Guilt Declines
The Wall Street Journal

For centuries, a bedrock principle of criminal law has held that people must know they are doing something wrong before they can be found guilty. The concept is known as mens rea, Latin for a "guilty mind." This legal protection is now being eroded as the U.S. federal criminal code dramatically swells. In recent decades, Congress has repeatedly crafted laws that weaken or disregard the notion of criminal intent. Today not only are there thousands more criminal laws than before, but it is easier to fall afoul of them. As a result, what once might have been considered simply a mistake is now sometimes punishable by jail time.

Gertrude Stein and the Nazis
Bill Berkowitz

Did you Know Gertrude Stein Nominated Adolf Hitler for a Nobel Prize in 1938? It Gets Worse. / An otherwise extraordinary art exhibit at San Francisco's Museum of Modern Art, is marred by leaving out some salient, but disquieting historical facts, namely: Prior to World War II, Gertrude Stein nominated Adolf Hitler for the Nobel Peace Prize; and, she survived the Nazi occupation of France and the Vichy puppet government thanks to at least one well-known French anti-Semite with close ties to the Vichy and Nazi regimes. Some details are still not clear, but the evidence of de facto tacit "collaboration" is.

Gertrude Stein's Complex Worldview: Nobel Peace Prize for Hitler?
Mark Weber -- Institute for Historical Review

Scholars of the life of Gertrude Stein were recently startled to learn that in 1938 the prominent Jewish-American writer had spearheaded a campaign urging the Nobel committee to award its Peace Prize to Adolf Hitler ... Stein's seemingly paradoxical views about Hitler and fascism have never been a secret. As early as 1934, she told a reporter that Hitler should be awarded the Nobel peace prize. "I say that Hitler ought to have the peace prize, because he is removing all the elements of contest and of struggle from Germany . By driving out the Jews and the democratic and Left element, he is driving out everything that conduces to activity. That means peace ... By suppressing Jews ... he was ending struggle in Germany "

Widespread Brutality and Corruption in Los Angeles Prison System Detailed in New Report
The Associated Press

A civil rights group launched a scathing attack against Los Angeles County's longtime sheriff Wednesday, demanding his resignation and claiming his sprawling jail system fosters a culture of fear, deputy brutality and corruption ... The ACLU called a news conference to demand the four-term sheriff's resignation, saying he and his top commanders are willfully indifferent to claims made by inmates and civilian jail visitors that deputies routinely viciously assault inmates ... It is "a jail system and a sheriff's department running a jail system through corruption, through intimidation, through unchecked violence and negligent, perhaps even nonexistent, supervision and management" ...

As Scorn for Vote Grows, Protests Surge Around Globe
The New York Times

... From South Asia to the heartland of Europe and now even to Wall Street, these protesters share something else: wariness, even contempt, toward traditional politicians and the democratic political process they preside over. They are taking to the streets, in part, because they have little faith in the ballot box ... The rising disillusionment comes 20 years after what was celebrated as democratic capitalism's final victory over communism and dictatorship. In the wake of the Soviet Union 's collapse in 1991, a consensus emerged that liberal economics combined with democratic institutions represented the only path forward. That consensus, championed by scholars like Francis Fukuyama in his book "The End of History and the Last Man," has been shaken if not broken by a seemingly endless succession of crises.

Why Google Earth Can't Show You Israel
Mother Jones

Since Google launched its Google Earth feature in 2005, the company has become a worldwide leader in providing high-resolution satellite imagery. ... There is one entire country, however, that Google Earth won't show you: Israel . That's because, in 1997, Congress passed the National Defense Authorization Act, one section of which is titled, "Prohibition on collection and release of detailed satellite imagery relating to Israel ." The amendment, known as the Kyl-Bingaman Amendment, calls for a federal agency, the NOAA's Commercial Remote Sensing Regulatory Affairs, to regulate the dissemination of zoomed-in images of Israel .

Obama: America's 'First Jewish President'?
Marwan Bishara - Al Jazeera

Obama is the "the first Jewish President". That's the title of New York magazine's lead article, written by John Heilemann and quoting a major Obama fundraiser. Listening to Obama speak at the United Nations on Wednesday many would nod in agreement, not less in Palestine and the Arab world. The US president has embraced the rejectionist Israeli position on the question of international recognition of an independent Palestinian state ... The fact that Obama surpassed his predecessor George W Bush, the most radical supporter of Israel among all US Presidents, has left everyone in Israel dumbstruck. The latest Zionist US president sounded like Israel 's own founding fathers.

Obama's UN Speech Boosts Rating in Israel
Agence France-Presse

US President Barack Obama's speech to the United Nations last week has sent his popularity among formerly sceptical Israelis soaring, according to a poll published on Wednesday. The poll, in the English-language Jerusalem Post newspaper, showed 56 percent of respondents consider the Obama administration's policies more beneficial to Israel than to the Palestinians. Just 19 percent said Obama's policies favoured the Palestinians, while 27 percent called them neutral.

Republicans Criticize Obama Over Israel
BBC News

Republican White House hopefuls have hit out at President Barack Obama's Middle East policy, as Palestinians prepare a bid for UN membership. Texas Governor Rick Perry branded the president's policy of giving equal standing to Israeli and Palestinian grievances "misguided and dangerous" ... Gov Perry, speaking to a group of Jewish and Israeli leaders at a New York hotel on Tuesday, said it was "wrong" for President Obama to have suggested earlier this year that these boundaries should be a starting point for negotiations ... Mitt Romney - currently second favourite to win the Republican nomination and challenge Mr Obama next year - also hit out at the president's Middle East policy.

Rick Perry Travel Bankrolled by Zionist Activist Rabbi Katsof

Rick Perry is talking up his travels to Israel on the stump -- a line that's likely music to the ears of an activist rabbi who made the governor's last two trips happen. The rabbi, Irwin Katsof, has spent years recruiting American officials to participate in lavish trips meant to strengthen U.S.-Israel economic and political ties. Perry's travel was bankrolled by Katsof's investment firm ... Katsof's companies awarded Perry their "Friend of Zion" and "Defender of Jerusalem" awards during the 2007 and 2009 trips, respectively, in recognition of his efforts to promote the U.S.-Israel alliance.

US Holocaust Museum Receives $17 Million Gift From Estate
The Associated Press

The estate of a Holocaust refugee who fled to the United States from Germany announced a $17.2 million gift to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum on Tuesday, the museum's largest gift ever. The gift from the estate of Eric F. Ross of Palm Beach , Fla. , and West Orange , N.J. , will help build the museum's endowment fund. The museum, located on the National Mall in Washington , announced that it aims to raise $200 million more over the next eight years. It receives federal funding for its operations and raises private funds for programs. Ross, who died in 2010, and his late wife Lore, previously donated more than $12 million to the museum. In total, they have given more than $30 million.

Al Qaeda Chides Iran Over 9/11 'Conspiracy Theories'
BBC News

Al-Qaeda has accused Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of spreading "conspiracy theories" about the 9/11 attacks in 2001. Inspire, an al-Qaeda-linked online magazine, described Mr Ahmadinejad's controversial speech to the United Nations last week as "ridiculous". The Iranian leader said he believed the World Trade Center towers could not have been brought down by aircraft. The article said such a belief "stands in the face of all logic and evidence". Entitled " Iran and the Conspiracy Theories", the Inspire article said Iran used the theory "as a rallying call for the millions of Muslims around the world who despise America ".

Thai School Apologizes for Nazi-Themed Parade After Jewish Complaints

A Jewish human rights organization on Monday called for Thailand 's Christian leaders to condemn a parade at the Sacred Heart School in Chiang Mai , Thailand , in which participating students wearing Nazi uniforms performed "Sieg Heil" salutes. The Simon Wiesenthal Center , a Jewish human rights organization based in Los Angeles , denounced the event, saying it was "glorifying Nazis." Photographs of the parade show participants carrying a Swastika flag, performing Nazi salutes, wearing SS uniforms, with others dressed as Adolf Hitler complete with toothbrush moustache ... On Wednesday, the school's website posted a letter by its director expressing an apology.
